The RWD bantam ‘A’ youth hockey team picked up two wins in three contests and avenged an earlier lopsided defeat on its way to a third place showing at a bantam tournament in Black River Falls this past weekend.
After opening the tournament with a 9-0 shutout against SHAW (Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin) in its opening contest, the bantams ran into a tough opponent from Monroe, falling 11-0 to the Avalanche which ultimately sent the locals to the third-place contest against the host Black River Falls squad.
The same two teams met in early November, Black River Falls winning by a lopsided score. However, this time around, a Kaden Uminski hat trick set the tone for a 6-3 RWD victory in the bronze contest, pushing the team’s overall record to a solid 12-2 on the season.
Cheavers 9 vs. SHAW 0
RWD got things off to a successful start with a lopsided shutout win, the second of the season for Alex Griebe.
Nolan Pope opened and closed the scoring for the Cheavers with RJ Manley contributing a hat trick and an assist. Kaden Uminski collected a goal and two assists with other goals for Alec Breunig, Gus DeFosse and Devin Hughes and single assists for Carter Renneberg and Tristan Edgerton.
The Cheavers collected four goals in both the first and second periods adding one more down the stretch.
Cheavers 0 vs. Avalanche 11
RWD saw the other side of a quick start in its second game, falling behind 4-0 in the first before stemming the tide to a single goal against down the second. But the Avalanche continued to cover the Cheavers in the third with another half dozen unanswered goals.
Cheavers 6 vs. Tigers 3
Before the loss to Monroe, the Cheavers had just one defeat on the season and that was a lopsided decision at Black River Falls earlier in the season.
If they were intimidated in the rematch it didn’t show as RWD sandwiched a long Tigers’ marker in the first period with two of their own, from Breunig and Uminski. Nick McPherson and Breunig had assists on the Uminski goal.
Both teams scored twice in the middle period, Uminski collecting one for RWD before Bryan Mammos added the game winner a short time later, on a feed from Carter Renneberg.
Insurance came in the final period with goals scored by Gus DeFosse and Tristan Edgerton and another set up for Uminski.
Three game weekend
The win boosted the Cheavers’ overall record this season to 12-2 and they locals will be back in action this weekend with three home games at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA). The Polar Caps B and Polar Caps B (Blue) from West Madison will make up the opposition Saturday with games at 10:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively before Dubuque Junior Saints wrap it up with a 4:45 p.m. faceoff on Sunday.
