Brandt lifts Cheavers to OT win

Caden Brandt’s third goal of the season couldn’t have come at a better time, the overtime tally boosting the Cheavers to a 6-5 win against the visiting Beaver Dam Golden Beavers at Reedsburg Area Community Arena on Friday night.

RWD carried a 2-0 lead out of the opening period and extended it to 3-0 in the opening minute of the middle frame, but it was all tied up at 3-3 heading to the final frame.

Both teams scored twice in the second, setting the stage for Brandt who fired his second of the game with just under three minutes to play in the eight-minute overtime session.

Clayton Pfaff collected set up Trevor Slaght for the opening goal near the four-minute mark and scored the second himself, unassisted. Danny Ely also grabbed an assist on the opening goal, his first of three on the night.

Freshman rookie Brady Baldwin collected his first varsity goal, unassisted, 24 seconds into the second, but the Beavers struck back with the next three including the first two from Ian Conlin who has a team high four goals and four assists, four games into the campaign.

Brandt put the Cheavers up again 5:01 into the third, from Ely and Grant Marsich but the Beavers rallied to even it up again just 68 seconds later. Slaght’s second of the game, from Logan DeMars put the home team in front with 4:52 to go, but once again, Beaver Dam struck back a little over a minute later.

Senior Brendan Karas collected his first varsity win, kicking out 24 Beaver Dam shots.

The win boosted RWD to 3-1 on the season, following up its first defeat while the Golden Beavers fell to 0-3-1.

RWD will play the first of two games this season against rival Baraboo/Portage Thunderbirds on Thursday night at RACA. The Thunderbirds fell to 0-3 Friday night with an 8-2 defeat on home ice against the Sauk Prairie Eagles at Pierce Park Pavilion

Opening faceoff on Thursday is scheduled for 7 p.m.and it will be the final game at RACA (barring a schedule change) until the New Year.
