The RWD Peewee A squad played host to the Viroqua Peewee Thunder on the weekend and sent them home disappointed with 6-1 and 7-2 wins at the Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA).

The first game ended up 6-1 but it was Viroqua on the board first, Caden Williams hitting the mesh with 1:44 to go in the first period.

The lead lasted 31 seconds before Tyler Krieski tied it with a set up for Ethan Wilcox and teams were even at 1-1 heading to the middle period.

Cheavers took its first and only lead 1:50 into the second with a goal from Landen Uminski, unassisted and Andrew Stando scored the next two before Uminski finished off a hat trick with two more in the third period. Krieski collected assists on two of the goals.

Jesse Arnold picked up the win in goal with 22 saves and Jack Ray stopped 19 in goal for the Thunder.

A few hours later teams hit the ice again and again it was the guests on the board first, Jackson Morrison netting his first of a pair 20 seconds into the contest.

Wilcox scored and teams were again even at 1-1 after a period. A second Wilcox put the Cheavers in front early in the second period, but Morrison notched the equalizer a few minutes later and teams were even again with 15 minutes to go.

Uminski fired his second game winner of the day and started his second hat trick of the day 4:46 into the final period and the Cheavers rolled to five unanswered goals in the period.

Krieski fired the other two RWD goals and Noah Backeberg wrapped up the game with a couple assists, others going to Stando, Wilcox and Dayne Wagner.

Another case of déjà vu saw Arnold once again getting the win with 22 saves and the Thunder had a pair of goalies combining on a 31-save effort.

The wins continued the team’s recent streak to five straight wins and after a tough start to the season, the Cheavers are now 5-5-1. They will look to climb over .500 for the first time traveling to the Madison area for three games.

On Saturday, the team will travel to Verona to play the Wildcats who defeated them in their first two games this season at RACA for a 9 a.m. faceoff and RWD will stop at Hartmeyer Ice Arena on the way home to faceoff against the Peewee Patriots at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, the Monroe Avalanche will be at RACA for an 11:30 a.m. contest, the first meeting between these Regional rivals this season.

Peewee ‘B’ Flyers capture wins in three of four on busy weekend

The Sauk Prairie Peewee ‘B’ Flyers wrapped up a busy weekend Jan. 23 capturing wins in three of four contests.

On Saturday, the locals started out with a 3-2 edge against McFarland at Sauk Prairie Arena Recreation Center (SPARC), then stayed on home ice for a 6-3 win against the Madison Polar Caps Green Peewees.

The Flyers hit the road for a pair on Sunday, beginning with a 5-4 win at Sparta Youth Hockey Rink then stopping at Viroqua on the way home where a 10-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-2 loss against the host Thunder.

McFarland Spartans 2 @ Sauk Prairie Flyers 3

Teams were even at 1-1 after a period, Caden Argall collecting the lone Flyers goal unassisted.

Both teams added one more in the second, Jameson Ballweg notching the Flyers’ goal on a setup from Tyler Jorgenson.

That set the stage for Argall who collected the lone goal of the final period which stood up as the game winner.

Ethan Goodman turned aside 21 of 23 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Flyers.

Caden Argall backhanded the game winning goal past the McFarland keeper late in the game in the first of four weekend matches for the Sauk Prairie Peewee ‘B’ Flyers.

Madison Polar Caps 3 @ Sauk Prairie Flyers 6

The Flyers scored twice in each period against the Caps, carrying a 2-0 lead into the second period and up 4-1 with a period to play.

Argall collected four goals in the contest to lead the Flyers, other goals added by Goodman who skated out and Ryan Jorgenson. Jacob Wiegmann picked up three assists in the contest with others for Jorgenson and Blake Dederich.

Ballweg took a turn in goal and kicked out 23 shots to pick up the win.

Sauk Prairie Flyers 5 @ Tomah/Sparta Titans 4

The Flyers grabbed control of this contest, opening a 3-1 first period lead and ultimately held off the Titans for the narrow win.

Wiegmann, Baryn Macleish, Kash Caldwell, Cyril Welch and Argall fired the Flyers’ goals, Argall with his second straight game winner. Tyler Jorgenson, Argall and Ballweg collected assists in the contest.

Sauk Prairie Flyers 2 @ Viroqua Thunder 5

The streak came to an end in Viroqua as the visiting Flyers fell behind 2-0 in the opening period and trailed 3-1 heading to the final period.

Wiegmann and Argall fired the Flyers goals, both unassisted.

Ballweg turned aside 21 shots, including 15 in the first period, for the Flyers.

The weekend results boosted the overall season record for the Flyers to 16-9 – not too shabby for a team that dropped six of its first eight games to start the season.

Breunig fires four to lead Bantam Cheavers past Ice Hawks

After dropping a pair of tough decisions Saturday, the RWD Bantam Cheavers came up with a big win for a satisfying end to a three-game weekend at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA).

The weekend started out with a tough loss Saturday (Jan. 2) morning to Viroqua Thunder Bantams who pulled out a 2-1 win, scoring the game winner in the final period. Later Saturday the bantams ran into Region 4 rival, Monroe Avalanche, staying even with them through a period, but ultimately falling 9-1.

On Sunday, the Cheavers got a rare visit from the Stevens Point Ice Hawks and came out on top in a physical contest that saw the visitors rack up 21 minutes in penalties, by a 10-3 margin.

In the opening contest, teams exited the opening period without a goal scored and both notched one in the middle period, Kaden Uminski finding the mesh with help from Tye Barney and Tristan Edgerton.

Collin Simonson fired both Thunder goals.

Alex Griebe turned aside 24 of 26 shots in goal for the Cheavers.

Later Saturday the Avs led early but Barney pulled the Cheavers even just over two minutes later from Alec Breunig and teams were still even at 1-1 after a period.

Monroe added three more and piled up another five in the third period to pull away.

Griebe was easily the busiest player on the ice, kicking out 24 shots in the first period alone on his way to a 52-save contest.

On Sunday, the Cheavers opened a 3-0 first period lead and added another before the Ice Hawks finally hit the board halfway through the second period and cut into the margin a bit, Cheavers up 5-3 heading to the third.

Five straight unanswered third period goals tipped the scales heavily in favor of RWD through the final 17 minutes.

Breunig led the Cheavers with four goals in the contest, Edgerton adding a hat trick and an assist with other goals for Carter Renneberg and Gus DeFosse. Uminski had a couple assists with others for Kayla Garbacz, Bryan Mammos and Nick McPherson.

The weekend results moved the Cheavers to 15-5 on the season so far and the team is scheduled to play in a tournament at Sparta this weekend (Jan. 8-10)

Competition tough for Squirt ‘B’ Cheavers

The RWD Squirt B Cheavers continue its search for its first win of the season, enduring a couple tough decisions this past weekend.

After a season opening tie against the Sauk Prairie Flyers ‘B’ Squirts at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA), the locals have dropped its next five contests, including this past weekend as the visiting Waunakee ‘C2’ Yellow Wildcats squad collected a 6-1 at RACA Saturday and the Cheavers fell 10-1 at Viroqua on Sunday.

Wildcats 6 @ Cheavers 1

The Wildcats fired the lone goal of the opening period and added another before Cole Renneberg fired the lone Cheavers goal with 3:12 to play in the middle period. Two goals in the final 90 seconds of the period widened the gap to 4-1 for Waunakee and the Wildcats added another pair in the third.

Jamison Haag kicked out 22 shots in goal for the Squirt Cheavers.

Cheavers 1 @ Thunder 10

On Sunday, the host Thunder settled things quick with a half-dozen unanswered first period goals but the Cheavers held them off the board through the middle frame before the Thunder added another four in the third.

Jase Uminski collected the lone goal for the Cheavers in the third period after taking a pass from Elliot Wilcox.

This weekend – Dells Cup

The Squirt Cheavers will face its busiest weekend so far when it faces off at the Dells Cup this weekend, beginning at 5 p.m. today (December 11) against Waunakee Wildcats in the tournament opener.

The Squirt Cheavers will be back on Saturday to face Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) Red Timberwolves Saturday in a 4:20 p.m. contest, then wrap up Round Robin play against Waukesha White Warhawks at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday.

Peewee ‘B’ Cheavers prepare for Dells Cup tourney

The RWD Peewee ‘B’ Cheavers continued to make its way through a tough schedule starting and finishing this past weekend with a pair of 4-4 draws with some tough losses in between.

The Cheavers played three of the four games at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA), beginning with a 4-4 saw off with the Tomah/Sparta Peewee ‘B’ Titans squad followed by a 7-4 loss against Sun Prairie/Beaver Dam C2 Cardinals on Saturday (December 5).

The following day started with a trip to Viroqua where RWD dropped a 6-1 decision against Viroqua Peewee ‘B’ Thunder but wrapped up with a return home and a 4-4 draw with the same Sun Prairie/Beaver Dam C2 team it fell to the previous day.

Titans 4 @ Cheavers 4

This thriller saw the visiting Titans grab a 1-0 first period lead before the Cheavers struck back with a pair of unanswered second period goals. A flurry early in the third had teams even at 3-3 and the Cheavers took a lead near the halfway mark but the Titans rallied to tie it again with 89 seconds to play.

Dayne Wagner fired two for the Cheavers while Andrew Stando added a goal and assist, the fourth goal an unassisted marker for Noah Mortimer. Aiden Knull also collected an assist in the game and Mason Mattson kicked out 15 saves for the Cheavers.

Cardinals 7 @ Cheavers 4

In the second game of the day, the Cheavers ran into a tough Cardinals team that turned a narrow 2-1 lead into a more decisive 5-2 margin in the middle period.

Wagner notched another two points with a goal and assist with other goals for Knull, Vladimir Barabash and Andrew Stando, Matthew Stando adding an assist.

Mattson turned in another 15-save effort in goal.

Cheavers 1 @ Thunder 6

In Viroqua, the home team build a 3-0 first period lead before Jenna Garbacz connected on the lone Cheavers’ goal, unassisted in the middle period.

Another three in the third put it away for the home team.

Mattson handled 19 of 25 in goal for the Cheavers.

Cardinals 4 Cheavers 4

The final game of the weekend saw the Cheavers rally back from a four-goal deficit to salvage a 4-4 draw against the Cardinals who fired all four of its goals in the middle period.

Andrew Stando found the mark for the Cheavers 2:01 into the final period, converting a pass from Wagner and it was Stando again with the tying goal just 51 seconds from the final buzzer, unassisted.

In between were two goals from Mortimer, the second with 1:06 to go, just 15 seconds before Stando notched the equalizer. Stando also collected a set up on the first Mortimer goal, the second set up by Knull.

Mattson turned in his best effort of the weekend with 20 saves, including all 10-shots he faced in the first period.

Weekend tourney in Lake Delton

The ‘B’s will switch its base to the Lake Delton Ice Arena this weekend to take part in the Peewee Division of the Dells Cup tournament.

After starting out Friday with a 9:40 p.m. game against the Green Bay Bobcats followed with a game Saturday at 3:10 p.m. against Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) Timberwolves and finally, the Waunakee Wildcats at 8:10 p.m. Saturday night.

The Peewees will also cram one more in Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. contest at RACA against the Dodgeville Ice Wolves.

Peewee A Cheavers getting hot as season rolls on

The Peewee ‘A’ Cheavers dropped its first but rallied back for three straight weekend wins.

After splitting a two-game set in Black River Falls Saturday against the host Tigers, RWD returned home and took both ends of a doubleheader against the Onalaska/Holmen Tornado peewees on Sunday at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA).

Cheavers 4 @ Tigers 7

Tigers fired the lone goal through the first half of the opening period, but teams exploded for seven goals in the final nine minutes of the period, the host Tigers carrying a 5-3 lead into the middle period.

Landen Uminski, Ethan Pope and Ethan Wilcox fired the first period goals for the Cheavers with assists for Jordan Kowalski and Tyler Krieski.

The lone middle period goal came from Elizabeth Haag who pulled RWD to within a goal on a feed from Wilcox.

The Tigers took over in the third, scoring two goals a little over a minute apart late in the contest to salt away the win.

Olivia Renneberg faced 25 shots in goal for the Cheavers.

Cheavers 7 @ Tigers 3

A short time later, teams regrouped for a second contest and this time the Cheavers used a heavy third period barrage to snag a big win.

Both teams scored once in the first and again in the second, but four goals in the first half of the third gave the visitors a lead it would not relinquish.

Krieski powered the Cheavers’ offense, firing three goals and adding an assist while Uminski potted a pair. Wyatt Arnold picked up a goal and assist and the other goal came from Payton Kowalski. Wilcox had three assists with Haag also collecting a set up.

Jordan Kowalski took a turn in goal and turned aside 25 of 28 Tigers shots.

Tornado 2 @ Cheavers 10

RWD exploded for 10 goals in their first game Sunday, half of them off the stick of Uminski. Krieski collected another hat trick and the other two came from Payton Kowalski. Hailey Dietl and Haag collected three assists apiece, Wilcox helping on a pair and Jordan Kowalski also getting a set up.

Renneberg collected the win in goal.

Tornado 1 @ Cheavers 7

Everything went RWD’s way again in the second, the lone disappointment possibly being for Jordan Kowalski who collected his second win of the weekend in goal but saw his shutout bid spoiled just 19 seconds from the final buzzer.

Paige Othmer enjoyed a big day on the offense, putting up three goals and an assist while Haag scored twice along with two assists.

Renneberg skated out and collected one of the goals and Payton Kowalski notched the other.

Dietl enjoyed a huge playmaking day, turning in five assists with Uminski adding a pair.

The Peewee ‘A’ Cheavers boosted its overall record to 10-4 on the season and the locals have won six of its past seven.

That streak will be on the line Saturday when the Cheavers play host to the Madison Patriots at 9:15 a.m. and 6 p.m. at RACA on Saturday, then entertain the Viroqua Thunder in Sunday games at 10:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Busy post-Thanksgiving weekend for area youth teams

A combination of Thanksgiving and hunting season slowed down youth hockey a bit in the past couple weeks, but entering December, teams are just a month away from Regional seedings and of course the holiday tournaments.

Throw in the Ducks and a full slate of varsity contests and there is plenty of action over the upcoming weekend.

Dells Ducks

The Ducks hit the ice right after Labor Day and the only let up was a forced one back in October. After playing right through the holiday weekend, the Ducks played a Thursday morning contest at the Lake Delton Ice Arena, falling to 0-21-0-0 on the season with a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Steele County Blades.

The traditional weekend dates are dark this time around, but the Ducks will be on the ice Sunday at 5:30 p.m. and Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to play the Northern Colorado Junior Eagles from the new Mountain Division.

The Eagles have a 13-3-1 record and sit second in the division standings behind only the Pueblo Bulls who have played seven more matches.

Varsity hockey

The opening week of WIAA varsity hockey enters its first weekend with a couple Sauk County teams in action.

The RWD Cheavers will be entering the third game of the season and the first road test when its heads to Fond du Lac to take on St. Mary’s Springs Ledgers the defending Division 2 State Champion with a large number of returning players with a high noon faceoff.

The Badger Lightning who opened their own regular season Thursday will be on home ice at Pierce Park Pavilion at 4 p.m.

Baraboo Thunderbirds have a weekend off and the Sauk Prairie Eagles will not drop the puck on its regular season until Tuesday.

Youth Hockey

Bantam

Both the Baraboo T-Birds and Sauk Prairie Flyers Bantam ‘B’ team will host Waunakee ‘C’ on Saturday, starting at Pierce Park against the T-Birds at 2 p.m. and followed up at 6 p.m. at SPARC against the Bantam ‘B’ Flyers.

Bantam ‘A’ Flyers have a weekend off.

RWD Cheavers are scheduled to play in a Black River Falls tournament this weekend beginning early Saturday with a game against the Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) Timberwolves at 8 a.m. The rest of the tournament is TBA.

U-14

The U-14 Monkeys have a busy four-game weekend scheduled, all at SPARC. The Central Wisconsin Storm will be in town Saturday for a pair of games, scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday it will be the Viroqua Thunder paying a visit with faceoffs at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The Badger Lightning will also be home for a pair Saturday, taking on the Mavericks at Pierce Park with faceoffs at 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Peewee

Sauk Prairie ‘B’ Flyers will be on home ice Saturday, taking on Waunakee C1 Red Wildcats in a 9:45 a.m. contest, then facing off against Viroqua ‘B’ at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Sauk ‘B’s will head to Baraboo for a 10 a.m. contest against the Peewee T-Birds.
The ‘A’ Flyers have a three-game homestand at SPARC with the Waunakee ‘B’ squad in town Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and a pair of games against Black River Falls Tigers at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.

RWD will see eight games for the peewees as the Peewee ‘A’ team hosts Black River Falls at 2:45 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, then entertains Onalaska ‘B’ Tornado in games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The ‘B’ Cheavers will face off against Tomah/Sparta at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, then returns for a 7 p.m. contest against Sun Prairie ‘C2’. On Sunday Viroqua will pay a visit for a 10:15 a.m. start with a rematch against Sun Prairie ‘C20 at 3 p.m.

U-12

The Sauk Prairie U-12 ‘A’ Monkeys will be at a tournament in Appleton on the weekend, beginning with a Friday night match against Wisconsin Valley Union Junior Eagles at 6:45 p.m. with the rest still TBA.

The U-12 ‘B’ Monkeys will also be on the road, playing two at Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon against the Green Bay Bobcats. The same two teams squared off the previous weekend, splitting a pair of games at SPARC.

Squirt

The RWD Squirt ‘A’ squad will kick off its weekend with a home game against Sauk Prairie Flyers ‘A’ at RACA at noon Saturday and makes the trek to Viroqua for a 2:30 p.m. start on Sunday.

The RWD ‘B’ Squirts will take on Waunakee C2 Yellow at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at RACA and will join their brothers in Viroqua Sunday with a 12:45 p.m. faceoff.

Sauk Prairie Squirt ‘B’ Flyers have just one game, a 7:45 a.m. start Saturday at SPARC against Waunakee C1.

After its game in Reedsburg Saturday, the Squirt ‘A’ Flyers will stay on the road, and play a second game at Onalaska, starting at 7:30 a.m. against the host Onalaska Tornado ‘A’ Squirts

The T-Birds Squirts are out of action until Dec. 12.

U10

The Sauk Prairie U-10 Monkeys will also take part in an Appleton tournament, starting Saturday at 9:15 a.m. against the Green Bay U10 Bobcats. The rest of the event is TBA.

It’s a light weekend – in fact, a couple weeks for RWD Cheavers youth hockey teams, but there are plenty of games in the hopper for the other youth squads head into the weekend.

RWD CHEAVERS

Peewee A – A tough test on the road Sunday for the Peewee ‘A’ squad that makes the trip to Tomah to play one of the top peewee teams in the area.

Bantams – The bantam Cheavers will get its first tournament test of the season making the trip to West Salem. Although opponents are still too be announced, games times of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday as well as 11 a.m. Sunday already appear on the schedule.

BARABOO T-BIRDS

Peewee – The Peewee T-Birds will entertain West Salem peewees at Pierce Park Pavilion for a pair of games on Saturday with puck drop at 9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Bantam – T-Bird Bantams have a busy weekend with three games scheduled. The first game will be Saturday at 3:45 p.m. at Pierce Park Pavilion at 3:45 p.m. and the T-Birds hit the road Sunday to play at Viroqua Community Arena with 10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. games against the host Viroqua Thunder.

SAUK PRAIRIE FLYERS

Squirt – The Squirt ‘A’ Flyers will be at Stateline Ice and Community Expo for a road contest against the Monroe Avalanche Sunday at 4:45 p.m.

The Squirt ‘B’ Flyers have a busy weekend, beginning with a visit from the Waunakee C2 Wildcats Saturday at 9 a.m. and then Sunday the C1 Warriors will be in town for a 1:15 p.m. contest.

Peewee – The Peewee ‘A’ Flyers will entertain the Sun Prairie ‘B’ Cardinals in a 5:15 p.m. contest at SPARC on Saturday, then travel to Stateline Ice and Community Expo to play the Monroe Avalanche at 2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The Peewee ‘B’ Flyers entertain the Sun Prairie C1 peewees at SPARC on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

Bantam – The Bantam ‘A’ Flyers will play host to the West Madison Polar Caps at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at SPARC and will hit the road Sunday to play the Monroe Avalanche at Stateline Ice and Community Expo Sunday at 1:15 p.m.

The Bantam ‘B’ squad heads to Monroe on Friday night for a 7:45 p.m. game against the Monroe ‘B’ Avs then moves on to the Ponds of Brookfield Ice Arena to square off against the Elmbrook ‘C’ Eagles in a 7:10 p.m. match. Sunday will see the Flyers back in Monroe for a rematch against the ‘B’ Avalanche at 11:45 a.m.

SAUK PRAIRIE MONKEYS

U-10 – The U-10 Sauk Monkeys will open its 2020-21 campaign Saturday in Beaver Dam with a 10:45 a.m. contest against the U-10 Beaver Dam Wildfire

U-12 – Some cancellations lightened the schedule somewhat for the U-12 ‘A’ Monkeys who will also be in Beaver Dam this weekend for a 12:15 p.m. match Saturday against the Wildfire U-12’s.

The U-12 ‘B’ squad will entertain the Washington County Lynx in a contest at 2:45 p.m. at SPARC.

U-14 – The U-14 Monkeys will travel to Beaver Dam Saturday for a return match at 1:45 p.m. Saturday having entertained the same squad at SPARC the previous weekend.

Bantam Cheavers take first four on home ice at RACA

The RWD bantam hockey team couldn’t have started much better, winning its first four contests – all on home ice at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA) before dropping its first game on the road Sunday.

The season started with a pair of games November 1 as the Washington County Ice paid a visit.

The Cheavers captured a 6-2 win in the first of two games then followed it up with a 3-1 decision later the same day.

Nolan Pope and Tye Barney both scored twice, both adding an assist with other goals added by Gus DeFosse, Kaden Uminski, Bryan Mammos and Carter Renneberg. Uminski also collected an assist with other helpers for RJ Manley and Tristan Edgerton.

Alex Griebe stopped 43 of 46 shots to pick up a couple ‘W’s’ between the pipes.

This past weekend, Griebe topped those performances with his first shutout, against Sauk Flyers ‘B’ team, turning aside 43 shots in the first of two games Saturday. The second was a 4-2 decision against the Viroqua Thunder.

Included in the 11 goals were two each for Mammos, Barney, Alec Breunig and Uminski and others from Pope, Ryleigh Bychinski and Renneberg. Breunig and Uminski both added a pair of set ups with others for Kayla Garbacz, Bychinski and DeFosse. Griebe moved to 4-0 with a 20-save effort against Viroqua.

The streak ended Sunday as the Cheavers headed to Black River Falls and ran into a mighty squad that included a trio of Team Wisconsin players.

The Tigers rolled to a lopsided win on home ice while the Cheavers chalked it up to a valuable learning experience. This weekend the Cheavers will face its first tournament tests of the season, travelling to an event at the new arena in West Salem. The locals are scheduled to play at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and again at 11 a.m. Sunday.
