Bantam Cheavers win three

RWD bantam Cheavers added three more wins to its total Dec. 12-13, all on home ice at Reedsburg Area Community Arena (RACA).

On the Saturday, the Cheavers battled the Madison West Polar Caps twice, collecting a lopsided 5-1 win early in the day, then pressed to the final minute in the afternoon rematch, an empty netter with just under a minute to go finally clinching a 4-2 decision.

On Sunday, the Cheavers faced and defeated Dubuque Junior Saints for the third time this season. After a pair of wins in Dubuque earlier this year, the Cheavers settled for a 3-2 decision on home ice on Dec. 13.

In the first game Saturday, the Cheavers grabbed control of the contest with three unanswered first period goals, scored by Tye Barney, RJ Manley, and Bryton Clark. Tristan Edgerton set up two and the other came with help from Caden Uminski.

Kayla Garbacz increased the lead with her middle period goal, from Edgerton and Gus DeFosse added another near the halfway mark of the third.

Alex Griebe kicked out everything fired at him until the Caps finally found an opening, robbing him of a shutout inside the final 20 seconds of the contest.

The second game was much closer, teams even at 1-1 after a period and 2-2 heading to the third.

Edgerton notched the first goal, unassisted, then set up Alec Breunig for the second period goal. It was Edgerton again, collecting his sixth point of the day with 4:20 to play putting the Cheavers in front for a third and final time before Manley slid home the clincher into an empty Caps net with 55 seconds to go.

Griebe collected another win in goal for the Cheavers with 20 saves, 11 of them in the final period.

RWD scored first again on Sunday, Uminski’s goal at the 5:35 mark standing up as the only goal of the first period.

The Saints fired the equalizer 4:32 into the second but Clark slammed a pass from Carter Renneberg home to put the Cheavers in front again just over a minute later. Another goal late in the period had teams even at 2-2 with a period to play.

The Cheavers turned up the heat in the final period, outshooting its guests 16-8. Uminski’s second of the contest, scored late in the period was the game winner with assists for Barney and Edgerton.

Griebe stopped 19 shots to collect the win.
