With four games behind them (1-3-0), the Dells Ducks head into its first off weekend of the regular season.

Dells Ducks

While the team will continue twice-a-day practices at the Lake Delton Ice Arena, the carrot of Friday/Saturday games on the horizon will be removed for this week, but Assistant Coach Mario Lachica the team is working hard with ‘flow drills’ run at game tempo to improve on timing and communication.

This past weekend was a busy one for the Ducks who not only wrapped up a stretch of eight games in two weeks but also adhered to a busy off ice schedule that included heading to Bobber’s Island Grill Thursday to check out former Dells Ducks forward Colin Cross, now a Nashville-based country-western artist in town on a short Midwest tour, promoting and selling tickets for a local outlet mall that had an open house type event Saturday and finally, attending the final day of a big championship points weekend at Dells Raceway Park on Sunday.

Colin Cross in the middle of back row, took a minute away from his four-hour show at Bobber’s last Thursday (September 23) to stand with his new Dells Ducks brothers. In front are Cross’ bandmates Tim Angsten (left) and Mac Watts on the right.

Monday seemed like a break despite a pair of practices.

The Dells Ducks got a midweek tune-up in preparation for its second home weekend of the United States Premier Hockey League Premier Midwest-West Regular season with an exhibition game against the UW Oshkosh Titans at the Lake Delton Ice Arena.

Dells Ducks

The Titans collected a 4-1 win, carrying a 2-1 margin out of the opening period and adding two more in the third.

A surprisingly physical and chippy exhibition contest showed a Ducks team not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the older squad, but also a little more disciplined on the night. As a result, the Ducks were assessed 14 minutes in minor penalties while the Titans sat 47 minutes including a five-minute major and a 10-minute misconduct.

Trent Bachman, a former member of the Dells Ducks was a captain for the Titans and his younger brother Sam Bachman suited up for the Ducks after debuting for the team this past weekend.

The Bachman brothers squared off in an exhibition contest at Lake Delton Ice Arena Wednesday night. On the left is Trent Bachman who played with the Ducks last season with his younger brother Sam. Both are defensemen.

Oshkosh hit the scoreboard first 6:44 into the contest but Jake Cartland equalized just 94 seconds later.

The winning goal came about three minutes later. After a scoreless middle frame, the Titans clinched the win with two more down the stretch.

The Ducks will be back in action this weekend against the Chicago Cougars in their third and fourth of eight straight home games to open the regular season.

For a weekend preview, the Ducks are asking fans to join us at Bobbers Island Grill on Thursday night to support former Ducks player Colin Cross who now is a successful Nashville-based County Western musician.

Happy Birthday Jacobsen

Bryce Jacobsen was looking for a place to play last season as the DeForest Norskies suspended play for its varsity hockey team due to the pandemic restrictions, in particular in Dane County. The Ducks are so happy he came looking in the Dells area.

Jacobsen tested the ice and liked the environment with the Ducks, signing on to play the final 23 games of the season. The center was an instant fit and went to to scoring five goals and add four assists through the remainder of the season.

Back for the 2021-22 season, Jacobsen was recently named one of the four team captains and despite a rough ride on the weekend against the visiting Rum River Mallards, Jacobsen scored a goal on a penalty shot and added an assist.

On Wednesday, Jacobsen celebrated his 19th Birthday. Saukhockey.info and the Dells Ducks want to wish Jacobsen a Happy Birthday

The Dells Ducks moved closer to its second weekend homestand of the season with Coach Anthony Rohde paying his weekly visit to the Dells.

Dells Ducks

Personal and work commitments are keeping the skating and stickhandling expert in the Chicago area permanently this season, but he makes the most of weekly visits to the Dells area. His practices are known to be the toughest and most specific in terms of areas that need improvement and the players love his ability to get the most out of them.

Before hitting the ice on Tuesday, Rohde said in an interview (see below) he discussed the areas of concern with the coaches and not only found the drills for a pair of Tuesday practices, but also mapped out the rest of the week with Head Coach Shaun Falzone and Coach Mario Lachica.

The Ducks continue to work back to front, working hard to lower enemy shots on goal and devise a plan for a quick transition from defense to offense in their own zone.

The Cougars are generally known as a high-octane offensive machine and the perennial Midwest-East will prove a formidable opponent this weekend.

Game time Friday and Saturday at the Lake Delton Ice Arena is 7:30 p.m.

Happy Birthday Seth

The Ducks are happy to have reaquainted with Seth Stoutenburg this season. A young team member in the 2019-20 season, the Roseville, MN native is back with the team this season and has made his presence felt on the ‘Blue’ line as a winger.

Held off the board on the opening weekend it’s just a matter of time before Stoutenburg hits the scoresheet. He plays a regular role on special teams as well as at regular strength and will be a big addition to the Ducks’ offense this season.

On Tuesday (September 21), Stoutenberg celebrated his 18th Birthday with teammates. Happy Birthday Seth!

Crosser back in town

Old School throwback hockey player Colin Cross was a fan favorite for his on-ice effort and sometimes pugilism when he starred with the Dells Ducks in 2013-14 and 2014-15, both ending with a return trip to Simsbury, CT which just happened to be the site of the USA Hockey National Championship tournament.

Both a fan favorite and popular with his teammates, everyone was aware of ‘Crosser’s’ love of Country-Western Music. In recent years, Crosser went all in on his passion and he has become a regular on the Nashville Music Scene where he now makes his home. In the midst of a tour that has taken him back to New England already, Cross will make making several stops in the Dairy State, including Bobbers Island Grill on Thursday night.

Please join us in welcoming Crosser back to town. Check out the set a Bobber’s, support a former Duck and a Ducks’ sponsor. You won’t be disappointed.

Tough weekend for Ducks on ice but plenty to cheer for

While the young Dells Ducks endured a steep learning curve in its opening pair of home games this past weekend, Ducks fans celebrated seeing some old familiar faces, musical entertainment and even a marriage proposal.

Many fans in attendance Friday and Saturday came to revisit old times with nine seasons worth of alumni players including most of the fan favorites from the past decade who played in a pair of fun but up-tempo scrimmages on both Friday and Saturday.

Among those that stood out in the alumni matches, original team member Kristian Casella turned in goals in both contests, wrapping up a trio in the Saturday contest; Ian Wood and Layne Martin who combined on a number of beauties on the weekend and Brett Johnson who, like Wood played professionally this past season. Anthony Rohde, current Assistant Coach of the Ducks showed his speed and ability to find room on the ice. Kevin Salinas, Adam Stanton and Johnny Recek played Saturday only with the ‘White’ squad and all three counted goals.

Including in Saturday’s Game were:

Team White – Brian Holappa (2011-12 Ducks); Tyler Jacobson (2012-13); Chuck Marcoe (2012-13); Kristian Casella (2011-12); John Recek (2011-12); Kevin Salinas (2012-13); Brett Johnson (2012-13, 2013-14); Cory Schwarz (2016-17); Anthony Rohde (2011-12); Alex Gunnar (2011-12); Adam Stanton (2014-15) and Goaltender Jared Young (2014-15, 2015-16).

Team Black – Connell Totten (2012-13); Johnny Schwarz (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14); Colin Cross (2013-14, 2014-15); Jake (‘Dale’) Stima (2012-13; 2013-14); Joey Bower (2012-13, 2013-14); Layne Martin (2012-13, 1013-14); Brady Hefner (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15); Danny Roe (2013-14); Bradley Hefner (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15) and Ian Wood (2013-14, 2014-15). The goaltending duties were shared by Robbie Meadows (2012-13, 2013-14) and Trace Wiles, a before/after player with the current Ducks who will play for RWD this winter. Also, guest player Tim Sanapolo who the Ducks ran into a few times at USA Hockey Nationals when he played for the North Iowa Bulls.

Honorary Coaches Kaden (left) and Kamron Morris are surrounded by members of the two Dells Ducks alumni teams following their game Saturday afternoon at the Lake Delton Ice Arena.

On Friday, the players showed their compete level was still high, refusing to accept a tie at the end and instead engaging in three-on-three overtime and a shootout before declaring a winner.

Honorary Coaches for Friday’s game were Ducks’ superfans Bill Pettit and Chris Pelisek. On Saturday the Morris brothers, Kaden and Kamron took a spot behind the bench.

Colin Cross, now a recording artist in Nashville entertained his teammates and Ducks fans at a well-attended get together at Bobber’s Island Grill, a sponsor for both the Lake Delton Ice Arena and the Dells Ducks.

On Saturday night, representatives from the Morris family from Bobber’s (Max Morris, JT Morris and Jeff Morris) dropped a ceremonial opening faceoff at the Lake Delton Ice Arena and with the crowd still buzzing with the Ducks up 1-0 on a tough Chicago Cougars team, John Recek capped a perfect weekend as a fake shootout competition was set up, giving him a chance to propose to his girlfriend at center ice.

Of course, she said Yes!

Here we go — Ducks opener tonight

The Dells Ducks will kick off its 10th season of play in a big way this weekend at the Lake Delton Ice Arena.

Ducks fans will get a chance to reminisce about the team’s past triumphs while seeing a Dells Ducks 2.0 rebirth under the leadership of the team’s original coach.

Many of the team’s greatest players will be in town for the weekend with a few events planned, [including alumni contests preceding the 2020-21 team’s first two regular season contests.

The new Ducks will open the season with a pair of home games against the Chicago Cougars and the opponent couldn’t be better for a night like this.

Behind the bench for the Ducks will be the original Head Coach, Shaun Falzone – now back as the team’s Head Coach/General Manager and Co-Owner. Beside him will be another original – Anthony Rohde, a member of the original Dells Ducks (2011-12) crew and now the team’s Assistant Coach.  Brian Guevara, the team’s Goaltending Coach is also expected to be in town for the opening matches.

On the opposite bench, the Chicago Cougars will have Josh Dallman as its Head Coach. Dallman of course, was the Ducks Head Coach for the 2019-20 season and scouted for the team before that. Along with Dallman will be Johnny Schwarz, another of the Dells Ducks original team members. Schwarz went on to play 125 games over three seasons with the Ducks.

Game time for both contests will once again be 7 p.m.

On both Friday and Saturday, a pair of Alumni teams will hit the ice for some fun contests starting at 5 p.m. Many of the fans favorites from the past decade will be in town for these contests. While most of our players have found success at the College level and beyond in the business world, there are a pair of players that have garnered legit ‘celebrity’ status heading into the weekend.

Colin Cross, 26, was one of the best penalty killers and defensive players through the first 10 seasons, playing for the Ducks in both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Cross pretty much wrapped up his hockey career with the Ducks and has taken the next step in his life, as a recording artist living in the capital of County Western music, Nashville, Tennessee. ‘Crosser’ is scheduled to perform after the Ducks-Cougars first game on Friday night just down Progressive Drive at Bobber’s. Cross, who will also perform the national anthem for the 7 p.m. game, hits the stage at Bobbers at 10 p.m.

Also Alex Radcliffe will be playing. Radcliffe, a member of the 2015-16 National Championship team, is also part of the crew on the reality television show Below Deck Mediterranean.

The games will include five former team captains: Kevin Salinas (Saturday); Tyler Jacobson; Jake Stima; Ian Wood and Chris Vella.

Team 1: Forwards – Brian Holappa; Cory Schwarz; Tyler Forest; Kristian Casella; Anthony Rohde; John Recek; Matt Raimondi; Chris Vella; Kevin Salinas.

Defense – Alex Radcliffe; Dylan Parshall; Alex Gunnar; Josh Krueger (only Wisconsin Dells resident to play for the Ducks, actually played a forward with the junior team).

Goaltenders – Dan O’Leary

Team 2: Forwards – Ian Wood; Joey Bower; Colin Cross; Brady Hefner; Layne Martin; Brett Johnson.

Defense – Johnny Schwarz; Tyler Jacobson; Chuck Marcoe; Jake Stima; Bradley Hefner; Connell Totten; Danny Roe and Mike Sullivan.

Goaltenders – Robbie Meadows and Jared Young.

Bush Cup Champions 2016

Along with the two games and the music at Bobber’s there is a plan in the works for a golf outing, likely on Saturday.

Honorary Coaches for the Friday night game will be Ducks’ superfans Chris Pelisek and Bill Pettit. Coaches for the second game Kaden and Kamron Morris will be behind the bench.

Another throwback will see the team’ original play-by-play guy, Matt Panure stepping back behind the microphone.

In keeping with the way the world is operating now, the Ducks will ask fans to wear masks and practice social distancing as much as possible. A couple masks featuring the new Dells Ducks logo ill be available for sale at the game as well.

Admission is $6 for Adults and $3 for seniors, children, students and Military/Vets.

Ducks pre-season games cancelled

Pre-Season Games originally scheduled for Saturday (September 19) for the Dells Ducks against the Rochester Vipers have been cancelled due to unpreventable circumstances.

The Ducks now prepare for their home opening contests next Friday and Saturday (September 25-26) against the Chicago Cougars.

The home opening weekend will have extra festivities with two teams of former Ducks players in town for a pair of alumni matches. The alumni games will begin at 5 p.m. both Friday and Saturday followed by Dells Ducks- Chicago Cougars warm ups at 6:30 and puck drop on the game at 7.

Among those in attendance on the weekend will be Colin Cross, a former Ducks’ player who now has a band in Nashville, Tennessee. Cross and his bandmates will be in town and following the Ducks game Friday night, they will perform at Bobbers Island Grill.

Saturday will be similar with the 5 p.m. Alumni contest followed by the Ducks vs. Chicago Cougars at 7 p.m.

This will be the first two of seven straight home games for the Ducks to open the 2020-21 regular season.

Jimmy D’s all-time Ducks — 4th line

Saukhockey.info

Whenever someone does ratings or rankings they almost always say “This was the hardest thing I have ever done.” Until now, I always thought it was a cop out.

Some really good players and great friends didn’t make this list. In fact, I sort of planned to do a qualifier with a bunch of Honorable Mentions, but then I thought. Well, what about the guys who just miss that list.

While I thought about who should be on here for a long time (since the end of this past season I have thought about doing this), when the time came to sit down and construct the list, the names came together quickly and with few alterations.

Since putting it together, I have been going through pictures and doing some of my Top 10 games and thought, “Dang, I should have had that guy.” I didn’t allow myself a chance to go back and change it though. I considered my first decision as final.

For sure not everyone will agree. There are enough of you out there that have been around the team as long as I have. I encourage you to make your own team as well…and I will put it in this space for you.

My fourth line is my defensive line – At least a few of these guys would be on the team whether there was a ‘checking line or not. But the Ducks’ penalty kill was so amazing in those early seasons, I had to give some of the guys their due. This I think is a combination of guys that could shut down the opposition, count an outrageous amount of shorthanded goals and in some cases, just got edged out for my top three lines.

Forwards

Ian Harris – Harris played two seasons with the Ducks and

Ian Harris

the 76 points he put up in 86 games played ranks him in a tie for 11th in all-time team scoring. Those stats aren’t the ones that stand out for Harris though.

This guy was a completely different player when the Ducks were shorthanded. I think he got genuinely excited with the ref’s arm went up with a minor call against the Ducks. I used to have all the statistics on the team, and I would update them after every game. However, a computer glitch a few years back made all that moot.

But I know this, Harris not only leads all Ducks in shorthanded goals, his total will never be broached. It’s ridiculous, like three or four times more than anybody. At the time, I followed the Green Bay Packers a lot more than I do now, and I recall they had some amazing cornerbacks who picked off a lot of passes. Harris was the hockey equivalent of that. Passes through the neutral zone somehow ended up on his stick and the play turned, frequently resulting in a Ducks’ celebration.

Harris went on to play a season of Tier 3 out east and wrapped up his junior career in Kingston, Ontario, playing Tier 2 hockey. He followed that up with a brief run of pro hockey with ECHL, SPHL and FHL teams.

I will always remember him as part of the best penalty killing combination our team will likely ever see.

Colin Cross – Harris racked up the points on the penalty kill and I believe ‘Crosser’ was an unsung hero.

The thing with Cross was, it didn’t really matter what the situation was –penalty kill, regular strength, power play, overtime…. He played every shift like there was 30 seconds left in the game and we were down a goal.

Colin Cross

The tenacious forechecking of Cross has made me question the way teams kill penalties at every level (including the NHL) since I was able to watch him play.

You know when you’re watching your team kill a penalty and they manage to clear the puck. The opposition defenseman skates back and positions himself behind the goal and your forechecking forward skates down and stops at the top of the crease? You must see it a dozen times every game.

Crosser never stopped at the top of the crease. He raced the length of the ice and chased that d-man right behind the net. If he stopped, Cross would plant him on the wall and hold him for a faceoff in the opposition end. If the defensemen wised up to what Cross was doing, he would grab the puck and look for someone to pass it to –quickly.  I believe it was that pressure that contributed to hurried passes ultimately picked off by Harris.

That’s my theory anyway.

Chris Vella – All he did in parts of four seasons with the Ducks was play in 128 games, fifth most of any Ducks player and collect 56 goals (third highest total), 47 assists (eighth highest total) for 103 points (sixth highest total).

Chris Vella

What I love about Vella is the way he went about making the team. As a 16-year old, Vella filled a lot of water bottles and carried a lot of gear to the bus but to my knowledge he never complained. In his first season. I don’t believe he made a game roster before Christmas Break. Certainly, not often. He calmly waited and took advantage of his opportunities.

Who knows if it was an injury or discipline being doled out that saw Vella’s name penciled in for the first time? He showed he belonged, sat a little more, then showed he belonged again. He ultimately made it impossible for Coach Zaniboni to leave him out of the lineup. By the time we arrived at Nationals that season, Vella was an every game player.

I think of that whenever I hear a player (or parent) say the coach didn’t like them or was against them.

The rest is history, Vella went on to become a great contributor in every situation, including defense and he wore the ‘C’ on his chest for the final two seasons. He had a brief sabbatical at the start of one season, playing Tier 2 hockey in Lindsay, Ontario, but decided he loved the Ducks too much.

Defense

Mike Sullivan – ‘Sully’ never lacked in his own end. He played 84 games over two seasons with the Ducks and while his bread and butter was stopping the other team from scoring, he was a more complete defender by the time he left the Ducks.

Mike Sullivan

Sullivan became more comfortable lugging the puck and even setting up on powerplays and as a result, he became a guy Coach Zaniboni relied heavily on. Time on ice is not a stat kept at this level, but trust me, this guy was up there in minutes played – perhaps a leader in his second season.

In his first season, Sullivan found his way to three goals and eight assists, then added 25 points with seven goals in his second campaign.

Sullivan had no trouble ratcheting up the intensity on the ice, but he was also well known for his ability to crack up the others off the ice and on the bus. A fun guy that came to play – that’s pretty valuable.

Sean Teske – It’s always great to have a local guy

Sean Teske

on the team. Reedsburg’s Sean Teske came aboard midway through the 2014-15 season and played two more after that. An undersized defenseman at 5’6, Teske didn’t shy from the physical game, but his style was more about tying up forwards and steering them away than laying thunderous hits.

He was comfortable with the puck, leading the play out his own end as often as he passed it out. Teske was not just a defensive specialist either. He played as a forward in his freshman and sophomore years on the RWD varsity hockey team and was a regular offensive contributor.

Effective on the powerplay as well, the most noticeable thing about Teske was his lack of slapshot. I don’t believe in his three seasons with the Ducks, he ever raised his stick off the ice. He was more about waiting for the right opportunity and firing a snapshot either looking for a deflection or a well-aimed shot straight to the mesh. Defensemen are usually known for their heavy shots but Teske knew the wrister was more accurate and reliable.

Jimmy D’s Top 10 — #9

Fort Wayne forward Ian Harris was the catalyst of the Dells Ducks effective and potent power play in the Dells Ducks early seasons.

Game 9 – Ducks score three shorties on one PK.

This game comes straight from memory. There is no game sheet. I don’t even recall the specific date and because this one was followed on Hockey TV (or its predecessor, Fast Hockey) there is no photo or video proof or backup.

This is one of only two regular season games in my Top 10 list and its more a testament to one of the greatest traits of the early Ducks teams as it is a specific memory.

It happened in either the 2012-13 or 2013-14 season, based on the personnel involved. The game was close at the time I believe probably in the second period when the Ducks took a penalty. What followed was amazing, but not as uncommon as it might seem. I have seen teams that were good on the power play, but in those two seasons, the Ducks actually considered the penalty kill a scoring opportunity.

There are many reasons for that occurrence, but for my memory, the two key ones are Ian Harris and Colin Cross. I don’t want to say too much more on them as they are going to come up again in the next few weeks, but Harris scored two of the three goals on that penalty kill and I honestly don’t recall who got the other. Maybe some readers or players that were involved will be able to contribute to this. At one time I had numbers that I updated without fail but not I get most of my statistical details from the website eliteprospects.com

Can you imagine the emotional boost a team gets from actually benefiting – heck—dominating a situation like this and on the other side how deflating would it be to actually prefer to not have a man advantage?

Anyway, unlike the other Top 10 games, there is not a lot of detail about this one.

But it happened….I promise.

Admission prices have not been announced but it is expected the prices will be the same as last season and one admission cost will gain entry to both games.
