Phillips’ hat trick leads 14U WEHL squad to win

The Wisconsin Elite Hockey League (WEHL) 14U SouthCentral Girls team wrapped up its 12-game regular season splitting a pair of games against the NorthEast/NorthCentral squad at the Lake Delton Ice Arena.  

After winning a wild offensive battle 7-4 to start the two-game set Sunday morning, the SouthCentral team had trouble finding the mesh the second one, dropping a 2-1 decision.  

A four-goal flurry for SouthCentral turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-4 draw by the start of the third and three more unanswered goals in the final frame lifted them to the win.  

Leading the way on offense was Anna Phillips (Black River Falls) with three goals and Julia Purinton (Madison Mavericks) notched a pair. Ella Knapp (Madison Mavericks) collected a goal and two assists, the other goal scored by Shelby King (Wisconsin TNT/Wisconsin Blue Devils AAA). 

Defender Tahni Barger from the Sauk Prarie Flyers/Monkeys and Wildcat Youth Hockey and Payton O’Neill (TNT/Blue Devils)set up a pair of SouthCentral goals with other assists for Phillips, Purinton and Carolina Cutrano (Mavericks). 

The second game was the opposite as SouthCentral opened the scoring early in the second period as Knapp set up Purinton’s third of the day, but this time the visitors struck back with a trying goal early in the third and a game winner with 6:20 to go. 

Also in the lineup for SouthCentral in this one and for the entire season was Sarah Hash from the Sauk Prairie Flyers/Monkeys and Wisconsin Jr. Stars along with Paige Othmer (RWD/Badger Lightning/Blue Devils) on defense and forward Reese Olson from Baraboo/Portage Thunderbirds/Badger Lightning/Blue Devils AAA. 

A goal Celebration from earlier this season. SouthCentral had plenty to celebrate in the first game, but had troubles on offense in the getaway game against NorthEast/NorthCentral on Sunday at the Lake Delton Ice Arena.

The split in the final series leaves SouthCentral with a 3-6-3 record in WEHL contests and a 7-6-3 record overall.  

The four teams from the 14U Division will compete in the championship tournament this weekend at Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.  

SouthCentral will face off against SouthEast in its first game Saturday at 9:45 a.m. In its previous four meetings with SouthEast, the local side owned a 1-2-1 record, but they haven’t faced each other in over a month. 

Second game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday will see the local squad taking on the Western team which it has yet to defeat, tying once and dropping the other three. 

On Sunday at 11:45 a.m. SouthCentral will wrap it up against NorthEast/NorthCentral who they hold a 2-1-1 record against this season. 

Uminski assist helps TW Black to a draw

Landen Uminski, from RWD Youth Hockey along with Alexander Kirk and Michael Joliceour from the Sauk Prairie Flyers, wrapped up play as members of the Team Wisconsin ‘09 Peewee  Black team on Sunday. 

Team Black squared off with Team Grey in two games at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond Du Lac, playing to a 4-4 draw in the first game, but falling 8-3 in the finale. 

In the opening game, Trevor Szkodzinsky scored a pair for Team Black with singles for Knox Cleland and Brett Toth. Uminski had a set up on one of the goals. 

Szkodzinski, Aliya Mihlbauer and Easton Jones scored the Team Black goals. The loss to Team Grey denied team Black a share of top spot in the four-team six-game Peewee ‘10 Showcase league. Team Black finished at 2-2-2, Team White finishing on to with a 3-2-1 mark and Team Red which played Team White at the same time, at McFarland wrapped up a 2-1-3 record.

Locals contribute on TW Peewee Combine squads

The local representation on Team Wisconsin has grown again with four Sauk County peewee aged players playing on two different teams in the TW Fall Combine program. 

There are four teams in the 2010 group with three locals – Landen Uminski from RWD along with Sauk Prairie Eagles players Alexander Kirk and Michael Jolicoeur play on Team Black. 

The other three teams are Team White, Team Red and Team Grey. 

The 2009 teams has three teams including Ethan Wilcox on Team Red which competes against Team White and Team Black. 

Teams went through a couple weeks of practices and entered their round robin play this past weekend.  

2010 Black  

The 2010 teams played at the McFarland Community Ice Arena. Team Black found the going tough with a 10-2 defeat in its opener against Team White, then rebounded with a 6-5 edge against the same team later in the day.  

In the opening game, Uminski scored one of the goals and Kirk picked up an assist. The later contest saw Jolicoeur getting in on the action with a goal and assist in a game dominated by Carson Schroeder who scored four times for Team Black. 

On Sunday, Team Black will move on to Fond du Lac, playing a pair of games against Team Red at the Blue Line Family Ice Center at 1 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.  

Team Red opened play with a 3-3 draw and a 6-4 win in Appleton last weekend.  

2009 Red  

Wilcox and the 2009 Team Red are in control of the play so far in the 2009 division, opening play at Oshkosh Community YMCA with a 3-1 win against Team Black followed by a 5-3 win against Team White.  

Ethan Wilcox picked up an assist in the second game. He and Team Red will hit the road to South Wood County Recreation Center in Wisconsin Rapids Sunday, squaring off against Team Black at 1 p.m. followed immediately at 2:15 p.m against Team White.  

Both teams will wrap up their round robin play the following weekend.
